Fleet Operations Specialist - Contract - Toronto
Skipperi is a fast growing, tech oriented boating company from the Nordics. We are sailors, motorboaters, landlubbers and fishermen, all passionate about making boating accessible for everyone. On top of boating, we sure do know a thing or two about software development, marketplaces and digital marketing! As a tech oriented company we are constantly looking for ways to make boating even more easy, safe and fun by utilizing technology.
We think that shared boating is smart boating. Skipperi Fleet is a digitalised and hassle-free boating service with over 400 shared-use motorboats and has grown to cover over 60 HOBs (Hop on boards) across 6 countries since 2019. We have also developed our own online training environment, Skipperi Academy, that together with practical training focuses on keeping our boaters safe out on the water.
We are now looking for seasonal operations staff, ideally with a passion for boating. This role will mainly be focused on taking care of our members and fleet, on-site at our Hop-On-Board locations, which are spread across the Lake Ontario waterfront from Whitby to Hamilton, with a focus on Downtown Toronto. We imagine that you have previously had a job with direct customer contact, and that you are proactive and not afraid to be hands-on. You are excited to work outdoors in all weather conditions (sun, rain, wind), and are comfortable working on and around boats and water, performing physical tasks. You are organized, thoughtful, and appreciate attention to detail. You are flexible, have a go getter-attitude, and thrive in cross-functional collaborations. You will be based in Toronto and work closely with the Skipperi Canada Team, as well as the Skipperi Operations team at the Skipperi HQ.
The work comprises the maintenance and operation of Skipperi’s motorboats, ensuring they are in top condition. You will be able to work independently with close assistance from the rest of the Skipperi Canada team. This can include, but is not limited to; small repairs, preparing and transporting boats for service and general cleaning. You’ll also be helping members by phone and email, offering a hand at the dock and assisting in administrative tasks. If you’ve already got your Canadian Pleasure Craft Operators Card (PCOC), that’s great! Having a Small Vessel Operators Proficiency (SVOP) is a big plus, but the only strict requirement is that you are willing to learn!
The contract is full time throughout the autumn in September, October and November, getting ready for the winter, ending November 15th. Flexible start is possible. Our boats are used multiple times a day, every day during the season, from the morning through the evening, and on weekends. We see it as important that you thrive working within a flexible schedule, and are willing to perform shifts over the weekend. Our harbours arespread from Whitby to Hamilton, so a driver’s license is preferred.
We are looking for you who can:
● Have experience of being out on the water and are fond of boats
● Are independent, take initiative and are proactive with suggesting areas for improvement
● Can create joy and unforgettable memories for our members
● Thrive with flexible work times and like varied tasks (everything from changing propellers, teaching how to dock a boat, and everything in between)
● Have your driver’s license (clean, with access to a vehicle being advantageous)
● Like apps, technology, and have a smart-phone and laptop computer
● Have the ability to build relationships and answer inquiries with our members via phone
● Have the ability to take content for social media, including photos and video
● Are based in the Greater Toronto Area
● Support Skipperi’s Country Lead, marketing, and operations teams
● Take part in related events (boating industry, startup, sharing/circular economy)
● Roll up your sleeves and find out what building a start-up really means
What we think would make you successful in this position:
● Excellent customer service and problem solving skills
● Boating skills and/or passion for being out on the water
● Great written and verbal communication skills in English(bilingualism/French is an asset)
● Willingness to service customers also outside of working hours (e.g. phone calls during peak
hours, customer events after working hours)
● Self-directed attitude (we are a startup and really mean this)
● Courage to try things out and take responsibility
● Like problem solving, with an eye for details
● Enjoy developing new solutions and keep looking towards the future
● Enjoy doing things instead of waiting, and if you don’t have marine maintenance experience, you are willing to learn
● Nautical qualifications will be preferred, as well as experience teaching (such as being an instructor of some kind
What we have to offer:
● A global work environment with colleagues that are fun, friendly, and willing to assist
● Opportunity to be an essential part of developing the service
● Possibility for flexible remote work
● Opportunity to grow and improve your skill sets within the business
● A work environment where we like to test, challenge, and improve
● An opportunity to grow along with us and change boating worldwide
● A lot of boating (a lot!)
● A fantastic place to work, right on the water
● A fun and motivated team
● The chance to test new things and try different tasks
