Trainer - Practical boat handling and PVOP
Do you have experience in boating, like to pass on your knowledge to others, and want to be part of the worlds first boat-sharing app? Then this job is for you!
This role will be focused on member training, on-site at our Hop-On-Board locations, which are spread across the Lake Ontario waterfront from Whitby to Hamilton, with a focus on Downtown Toronto. We imagine that you have previously had a job that required you to be a hands-on and active instructor. You are excited to work outdoors in all weather conditions (sun, rain, wind), and are comfortable working on and around boats and water. You are organized, thoughtful, and appreciate attention to detail. You are flexible, have a go-getter-attitude, and thrive in cross-functional collaborations. You will be based in the Toronto area and work closely with the Skipperi Canada Team.
The work comprises preparing our vessels for a two-hour on-water practical training session, greeting and developing a personal relationship with trainees (up to 4 per session), running trainees through a proven syllabus to teach boat-handling skills and techniques, and evaluating performance.
We also teach an in-house Ports Toronto permit (PVOP): The permit issued by Ports Toronto for all boaters operating within the Port and Harbour of Toronto. If you are already authorized to issue this permit (or would be willing to learn), this is an added bonus.
The work is seasonal and casual/on-call, with the high season being from May-August, but we also need help in April (preparing for the season) and throughout the autumn in September, October and November, getting ready for the winter. We anticipate being able to offer flexible hours beginning as early as April 1. Our operational season runs until October 31 st . Flexible start and end dates are possible and we encourage students to apply. We see it as important that you thrive working within a flexible schedule, and are willing to perform shifts during the daytime, evenings and over the weekend.
We are looking for people who:
- Have experience of being out on the water and are fond of boats
- Are independent, take initiative and are proactive with suggesting areas for improvement
- Want to create joy and unforgettable memories for our members
- Thrive with flexible work times
- Like apps, technology, and have a smart-phone and laptop computer
- Have the ability to take content for social media, including photos and video
- Are based in the Greater Toronto Area
What we think would make you in successful in this position:
- Excellent customer service and problem solving skills
- Boating skills and/or passion for being out on the water
- Great written and verbal communication skills in English
- Self-directed attitude (we are a startup and really mean this)
- Courage to try things out and take responsibility
- Enjoy developing new solutions and keep looking towards the future
What we have to offer:
- A global work environment with colleagues that are fun, friendly, and willing to assist
- Opportunity to be an essential part of developing the service
